The CPL's Biggest Statistical Surprises So Far

We are 8 games into the CPL season, and I decided it was time to start looking at some early trends we're starting to see develop in the 2026 season. The stats I'll be using to analyze players are True SR/Eco, as well as some line and length data. If you aren't familiar with True SR/Eco, I highly suggest you read my article on the site that explains it. And if you're confused about line and length data, it's basically aggregated from many different sites. These will be the main data points I'll be using in my analysis.
So here's what turned up through game 8.
1. Vitel Lawes' growing pains, on "full" display
The 19-year-old has struggled so far this season, and his True Eco line-and-length breakdown shows exactly where the breakdown is happening. Lawes is getting crushed at his most-bowled length, full, with roughly 39% of everything he's thrown this season landing there (30 of his 77 tracked deliveries), with a True Eco of -1.41. But it's not all bad: it's clear that's not the length he's trying to hit, since good length is where he's actually a plus bowler, a True Eco of +0.61 across 25 balls.

Pull up his line-and-length map and the story is clear: full-length is dark red across the board, while good-length one row down is where he gets good results. If he tightens up and lands more of what's already sitting in the good-length band, his season-long number (-3.67 True Eco) should improve.
2. Andre Russell continues to struggle against spinners
Russell used to be a fairly balanced batter, able to hit both spinners and seamers well, but recently a trend has begun to form where he's struggled against spinners: his True SR is -1.91 across 32 balls batting against spinners. Against seamers, it flips to +3.27 across 34 balls. That's a swing of roughly 5.2 runs per over depending on who's bowling at him. This is one of the largest swings of any batter in the CPL this season.

IPL 2025 vs CPL 2026 — the spin struggle predates this season, but it's gotten sharper.
One thing to pour some water on the fire, though: this isn't new. In his most recent IPL season, 2025, he batted -0.27 against spin and +1.25 against seam, still negative against spin, just a smaller dip than this season's -1.91. That suggests this season's rough start against spin is a floor season (worst possible) and it's likely up from here. Don't expect a positive number against spin, but something closer to 0 than -2 is a reasonable bet as the sample grows.
3. Rahkeem Cornwall's all-or-nothing approach is working
The big man has opened the 2026 season on fire, with a True SR of +2.06 — 4th in the league among qualified batters. His numbers come with some ridiculous volatility though, which is what makes it so fascinating. First, the dots: 49% of the balls he faces go for nothing, one of the highest rates in the league. So what's the other result? 25.5% of the balls he faces go for a boundary, which puts him in the 91st percentile of every CPL batter this season. And it doesn't matter who you give him — he's positive against both spinners (+1.28) and seamers (+2.39). Boom or bust, but mostly boom. Big boom.
4. Hassan Khan has figured out his length
Hassan Khan had an average season in 2025, ending it with a True Eco of +0.12 — a touch above average. But since the start of 2026, his True Eco has climbed to +0.91, good for 7th among every CPL bowler with a real workload this season. So what changed? Looking at his length profile, he now bowls good length 19.7 percentage points more often than he did in 2025, based on 73 tracked deliveries in 2026. This adjustment has been very rewarding for him, and the numbers agree.

True SR and True Eco compare every delivery to what an average CPL player would be expected to produce at that exact over-and-ball position, then express the gap as extra runs conceded or scored per over. Line/length is drawn from CPL 2026's commentary-tracked deliveries; where a sample is still small, it's noted above rather than dressed up as settled.
